Ukraine's military intelligence unit, the GUR, claimed on Sunday that it struck two Russian landing ships and a radar station in Sevastopol Bay in Russian-occupied Crimea, in what Kyiv described as a significant blow to Moscow's Black Sea naval presence. The claimed strikes are yet to be independently verified, and Russia had not issued an immediate response regarding the Crimea attack.

Ships valued at $150m hit, Ukraine says

According to Al Jazeera English, the GUR stated that the two landing vessels targeted in the operation were valued at approximately $150 million and were successfully hit. The agency also said a radar installation in the bay was struck in the same operation. Sevastopol serves as the home port of Russia's Black Sea Fleet and has been a recurring target of Ukrainian long-range strikes since the full-scale invasion began in 2022.

Tuapse port struck for second time in three days

Separately, Ukrainian drones targeted the Russian port of Tuapse, marking the second such strike on the facility in three days. The regional governor, Veniamin Kondratiev, confirmed that the attack killed at least one person, injured another, and caused damage to transport infrastructure in the area.

Russia's Defence Ministry, meanwhile, said its air defences intercepted and destroyed 112 Ukrainian drones overnight, without specifying the locations or outcomes of the intercepts.

Russian strikes cause casualties across Ukraine

The overnight exchanges came as Russian drone and missile attacks continued to cause civilian casualties across multiple Ukrainian regions. In the city of Putyvl in Ukraine's Sumy region, a Russian drone struck a car, injuring three women. In the Brovary district of the Kyiv region, two homes were damaged and one person was injured in a separate drone attack.

Mykola Kalashnyk, head of the Kyiv regional military administration, warned of continued danger to civilians as the attacks unfolded.

"Tonight, the enemy is again attacking the Kyiv region with drones. Under the sights are peaceful people, homes."

Russian attacks also struck railway infrastructure in Kharkiv. In the Kherson region, one person was killed and seven others were injured over the preceding 24-hour period. Four additional injuries were reported in Zaporizhia region as a result of Russian strikes.

Broader context

The flurry of strikes on both sides underscores the continued intensity of the conflict as frontline fighting persists across eastern and southern Ukraine. Ukraine has increasingly relied on long-range drone operations to target Russian logistics, naval assets, and infrastructure deep inside Russian-held territory and on Russian soil. Independent confirmation of the Sevastopol naval strike claims remains pending.
