The Cyprus Football Association (CFA) has suspended all Saturday fixtures from midday onwards across the Second Division, Third Division and youth leagues due to elevated dust levels in the atmosphere, while a decision on top-flight matches — including the high-profile Omonia versus APOEL derby — remained pending.

Postponements Across Three Tiers

According to an official statement reported by In-Cyprus, the CFA announced the widespread suspensions citing poor air quality as the primary concern. The body confirmed that all matches in the Second Division, Third Division, and youth competitions at under-19, under-17, under-16, under-15 and under-14 level that had not yet kicked off as of midday were subject to the postponement order.

The decision affects a significant number of fixtures across Cypriot football's lower professional and amateur tiers, as well as its youth development pathway. No rescheduled dates have yet been set, with the CFA stating that new dates would be confirmed at a later stage.

Top-Flight Fate Still Undecided

As of the announcement, the Cyprus League by Stoiximan — the island's top division — had not been included in the suspensions, but its Saturday fixtures were placed under active review. Three matches were identified as potentially affected: Omonia against APOEL, scheduled for a 5pm kick-off, and two evening fixtures — Paphos against AEK and Aris against Apollon, both set for 7pm.

The Omonia-APOEL clash is among the most fiercely contested fixtures in the Cypriot football calendar, drawing large crowds and significant public attention, making a potential postponement particularly notable.

The CFA indicated it would issue a further update on the status of the top-flight matches at around 2pm, giving clubs and supporters a narrow window before the first evening kick-offs.

Public Health the Driving Factor

The mass cancellations reflect growing awareness among sporting bodies in Cyprus of the health risks posed by dust and particulate pollution events, which periodically affect the island — often caused by Saharan dust carried across the Mediterranean. Playing sport outdoors during periods of elevated dust concentration can pose respiratory risks, particularly for younger athletes.

Clubs and fans affected by the Second and Third Division postponements were advised to await official communication from the CFA regarding rescheduled match dates.
