Larnaca Municipality has announced a public demonstration for Wednesday, 29 April at 18:00 at the Larnaca Port roundabout, calling on all residents to join a protest over the long-delayed development of the city's port, marina, and surrounding land. The action follows an announcement by the Committee for the Development of Larnaca City and District on 18 April regarding the project's future.
Press conference to precede the march
Before the demonstration takes place, the municipality has scheduled a press conference for Monday, 27 April at 10:00 at the municipal Multipurpose Centre for Social Welfare and Employment. The event will lay out the municipality's position on the port and marina development and is expected to set the tone for the protest two days later.
A project long in the making
The redevelopment of Larnaca's port and marina has been a focal point of civic ambition for years, with successive planning phases and contractual negotiations repeatedly failing to deliver a concrete construction start. The stalled project has frustrated residents and business owners alike, given the significant economic potential the seafront development represents for the city — from tourism and maritime commerce to the regeneration of adjacent public spaces.
According to In-Cyprus, local stakeholders reached a unanimous decision to take coordinated action to ensure the project moves forward following the 18 April committee announcement.
Municipality demands immediate action
The municipality has made its position unambiguous. In a statement calling for resident participation, it declared that
"the city will not accept further delays, ambiguities, or setbacks."
The statement went further, insisting that
"Larnaca can no longer wait."
Alongside the call to protest, the municipality issued a set of clear demands: immediate decisions from the relevant authorities, a transparent and concrete design plan, and the prompt start of construction work on the port and marina site.
What happens next
Residents and local stakeholders are being urged to gather at the Larnaca Port roundabout on 29 April to give the protest broad civic weight. The municipality's twin-track approach — a formal press conference followed by a public demonstration — signals a determination to keep pressure on decision-makers until meaningful progress on the development is secured.
